Traditional Radiation Vs Imrt For The Treatment Of Postmastectomy Breast Cancer

IMRT is a form of radiation that shows promise.

Radiation therapy is often suggested after mastectomies for patients with advancing breast cancer. There are a number of different types of radiation used with, IMRT being one of the more popular forms.

Radiation Explanation

Traditional breast cancer radiation is commonly performed with External Beam Radiation Therapy (EBRT). It may target the area of the tumor, the entire breast, the lymph nodes or all of the previously mentioned. Sometimes the procedure uses three-dimensional equipment.

IMRT Significance

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is used most often for breast only radiation. It involves more precision of the radiation dose, uniformly delivered where needed.

Treatment

IMRT and traditional radiation for the post-mastectomy patient both involve daily treatment. The IMRT requires longer sessions with lower doses of radiation.

Side Effects

Since IMRT gives the patient a lower dose of radiation, there are traditionally less side effects, like fatigue and skin soreness. It is also expected that there will also be fewer long-term effects.

Considerations

IMRT is showing promise as a treatment for post-mastectomy breast cancer, however, it is not available at all centers and has not been around long enough for the long-term outcome and effects to be evaluated.
