Coleman Black Max Air Compressor Starting Problems??

I have a Coleman Air Compressor Model B45l250P1D101. It is 4.5 HP with a Magnetek Century AC Motor on it. It was running fine and when it started up on auto (when tank pressure fell below set point), it was running real ruff. I looked and there were blue sparks in the back of the motor. I took the motor end off and took fine emery cloth and dressed the points and it started and ran real good. Now it won't start except intermittently. Sometimes it starts and other times it won't. It seems like a switch somewhere needs to re-set before it will start again. It use to start no matter how many times you turned it on and off. Now once you turn it on, it runs a little and you turn it off, it won't start up again for a while. When it starts it runs ruff for just a second or two then does okay. Could it be the start capacitor or the run capacitor? I hope this explanation is clear, if not maybe I can fill in the gaps if someone has questions. Thanks everyone. Larry What points were you cleaning? On the switch? It sounds as if you may have brush problems. The blue sparks indicates the brass brush carrier is touching the armature inside the motor. Thanks, chandler, the blue sparks are no longer occurring. The points are on the bakelite (or Plastic) plate at the very end of the motor. The plastic holds the bearings for the motor shaft and the connectors for the electrical wires. There is a disc on the motor shaft that contacts the arm of the points causing them to open and close. The points seem to okay now, but I may have a better description of the problem. When the motor starts, it hesitates and you can hear the pump chugging a little bit before the motor picks up and starts running. Once running, the motor sounds and runs great. That's why I'm thinking it may be the start capacitor. One time I tried to start it right after tuning it off and it would not start. A minute later, I heard a click and I hit the switch and it started fine. Hope this helps a little. Thanks, Larry. You can check the start capacitor. It's fast and easy, and cheap to replace if needed. It certailly sounds like the start circuit triggers the thermal overload. But is it an auto reset, cos you do not mention pushing any buttons? When you were filing down the points on the centrifugal switch, you did not damage anything or somehow cause the switch to stick, did you? I don't think I damaged anything. This compressor is about 15 years old and I think the motor has finally just wore out. Over the years, I put in a rebuild kit on the pump and replaced the check valve. These compressors are not really built to last forever. I guess 15 years is pretty good. I called the company (Coleman) where I bought the parts for it and they told me there is no replacement motors for this model. They said it is so old that those parts are no longer available. I guess I'll start shopping for a new one. Thanks markiz37. Larry
