The salary of a registered nurse with an associate degree is slightly less than that of a nurse with a bachelor's degree. The occupational opportunities available to a nurse with a bachelor's degree are also more varied that those for a nurse with an associate degree.
Education
If you want to become a registered nurse, several educational paths are available to you. Some result in an associate degree and others result in a bachelor's degree. Some nurses may even go for a master's degree and practice a specialized form of nursing. A few diploma programs are also available, as are accelerated bachelor of nursing programs for those who already have a degree. Graduates of any of the bachelor, diploma or associate degree programs qualify for entry-level RN positions.
Range
Registered nurses in the United States earn an average salary of $66,530, or $31.99 per hour. Those earning in the 25th percentile (75 percent earn more) earn $52,520 per year, or $25.25 per hour. The 75th percentile (25 percent earn more) earns $77,970 per year, or $37.49 per hour. The median salary is $63,750 per year, or $30.65 per hour.
Associate Degree
Registered nurses earn in the range of $21.87 to $30.13 per hour, or $45,241 to $62,904 per year with an Associate Degree in Nursing, according to a survey by the salary survey website PayScale as of February 2011. With an Associate of Science in Nursing degree, the pay range is between $21.73 and $30.15 per hour, or $44,760 to $62,696 per year. Those with a diploma in nursing earn between $24.30 and $33.40 per hour, or $50,878 to $70,322 each year.
Bachelor's Degree
With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, a RN can earn between a few thousand more per year than a nurse with an associate degree. The pay with this degree ranges between $22.82 and $31.82 per hour, or $46,763 to $67,691 each year. With a bachelor of science degree, a RN's pay ranges between $22.91 and $31.19 per hour, or $50,289 to $71,216. With a bachelor's degree, a registered nurse has more advancement opportunities and can lead to positions in administration, consulting, research and teaching. It also offers more clinical experience in non-hospital settings.
