DESA International Vented Gas Log Fireplace

I am the original owner of a home (6 years new) with a DESA International gas-log fireplace. It has a wall switch for on/off. The fireplace has worked well for 6 years. In November 2009, the flame would shut-off automatically while the pilot remained on. I contacted a repairman from a local fireplace shop, a master gas fitter. For my $125.00 he utilized a pen knife and scraped an area on the THERMOCOUPLE sensor, the THERMOCOUPLE located on the left side of the pilot light. He said that soot keeps the sensor from proper operation. That seemed to work for a few days. Since then it has continued. We travel and the item has not been a priority until today. To the right of the pilot light is what the DESA manual refers to as the THERMOPILE. I have checked the voltage and receive about 500 milli volts at the terminals. I utilized steel wool and thoroughly cleaned both the THERMOCOUPLE and THEROMPILE. I have turned the screw called PILOT both clockwise and counter-clockwise. This seems to solve the problem at times. The gas fitter also told me to order a gas valve just in case it ever goes bad. Like he said, “you would need to replace the entire unit, the framing, venting and tile work around it; thousands of dollars.” What? DESA in Bowling Green Kentucky appears to be out of business. Which item, the THERMOCOUPLE or THERMOPILE should be replaced? Is this something that I can accomplish? Ken Lancaster Memphis The first thing you should do is call the Master Gasfitter and demand your money back !!! He didn't know what he was doing. The thermocouple only operates the pilot safety shut-off system. The thermopile's job is to assist with the operation of the main burner. What is the mv reading of the thermopile with the switch in the on position? It may be a bad switch. Yup, DESA is no longer in business.
