Kitchenaid Dishwasher Installation Instructions

KitchenAid Dishwasher Installation Instructions

Installing a KitchenAid dishwasher in your kitchen can help cut down time spent cleaning off dishes after family meals. These appliances utilize a spray of hot water and soap to rise food and other debris from the dishes and keep them sparkling clean. A pump located in the bottom of the dishwasher suctions the water out and sends it through a drain hose into your home's sewer. The installation instructions for a KitchenAid dishwasher aren't difficult, but there are some steps that should be done by a professional.

Instructions

1. Run an electric cable for the dishwasher from the main circuit breaker to the KitchenAid dishwasher location. This needs to be done by a certified electrician. The dishwasher should be on its own circuit.

2. Install a dual outlet supply valve underneath the kitchen sink if you do not already have one. The water supply hose for the kitchen faucet will take up one outlet, and the washer will take up the other. If you do not have one installed, shut off the water for your household at the main valve next to the water meter. Unhook the faucet supply hose from the supply valve. Unscrew the old water supply valve by turning it counter-clockwise. Apply pipe thread compound to the threads on the water supply pipe. Thread the new dual valve outlet onto the end of the water supply pipe.

3. Install a dishwasher tailpiece underneath the sink if you do not have an attachment for a dishwasher drain hose. The tailpiece is the straight piece of plumbing located just underneath the drain. Place a bucket underneath the curved P-trap. Unscrew the couplings on either end of the P-trap and pull it out of the plumbing. Empty the contents of the P-trap into the bucket. Loosen the jamb nut located just beneath the drain and pull it off the tail piece. Unscrew the tailpiece from the drain by turning counter-clockwise. Insert the dishwasher tailpiece into the drain from underneath and tighten. Slide the jamb nut over the end of the tail piece and tighten against the underside of the drain. Slip the P-trap back into place between the tail piece and the sewer inlet. Tighten the couplings.

If you have a garbage disposal installed underneath the sink, use a screwdriver to knock out the hole on the side where the dishwaser hose attaches.

4. Slide the KitchenAid dishwasher underneath the counter where it will be installed. Remove the toe panel and the kick panel located at the bottom lf the washer. The kick panel is located just underneath the door. You may need to open the door in order to access the screws at the top of the kick panel. The toe panel is held in place with screws on either side.

5. Wrap the free outlet on the dual supply valve with plumber's tape. Connect one end of the water supply hose coupling to the supply valve. Run the hose to the dishwasher. Drill holes through the cabinet, if necessary, with a power drill and spade bit. Sand down the edges of the holes before feeding the water supply hose through. Wrap the threads on the elbow joint in the front of the washing machine with plumber's tape. Connect the coupling from the other end of the hose to the elbow joint.

6. Connect the electrical box on the underside of the KitchenAid to the electrical circuit. The circuit wires will either connect to screw in terminals, or need to be spliced into wires leading to the power box on the dishwasher. In either case, the coding is as follows: black, or live, connects to black, white, or neutral, connects to white and the copper wire, or ground, from the electrical circuit connects to a screw in the back of the electrical box. Some KitchenAid models may have a green ground wire that should be connected to the copper wire.If splicing wires together, secure with a wire nut and electrical tape.

7. Run the drain hose from the KitchenAid to the tailpiece or garbage disposal. Cut off the end of the hose to make the appropriate connection. The hose should be marked with widths for both the garbage disposal connection, which is wider, and the tailpiece connection. Secure with a hose clamp.

8. Level the dishwasher by adjusting the legs at the bottom until is is level both side to side and front to back. Use the spirit level to check the dishwasher angle. Secure the dishwasher in place with the brackets to the underside of the counter.

9. Turn on the power to the dishwasher circuit. Restore the water supply at the main.

10. Run a short load on the dishwasher. Check for leaks and proper operation. Tighten any couplings, if necessary. When everything is working properly, replace the toe and kick panels and secure.
