Pros & Cons Of Clarity Enhanced Diamonds

Clarity enhanced diamonds cost less than natural diamonds.

Clarity enhanced diamonds are flawed natural diamonds that have been artificially treated to remove imperfections. Enhanced diamonds are used in all types of jewelery, including rings, earrings and necklaces.

History

The process of filling fractures in diamonds was first invented in 1982, by Israeli scientist Zhi Yehuda. Since then a number of clarity treatments, including laser drilling and color enhancement, have been developed.

Grading

Diamonds are graded according to clarity, cut, color and carat. Any flaws that are visible under a microscope are labeled SI for slight inclusions, while flaws visible to the naked eye are labeled I for inclusions.

Pros

Clarity enhanced diamonds are valued at approximately 30 percent less than un-enhanced diamonds, allowing budget conscious shoppers to purchase a larger stone at a lower price. Color enhancement treatments can be used to completely remove or even alter a diamond's original color.

Cons

The old adage 'you get what you pay for' may ring true when it comes to the actual quality of the stone. Original fractures in the diamond make it more susceptible to heat damage and chipping in the long-run.

Top Tip

Smart buyers ask for a GIA (Gemological Institute of America) certificate to authenticate a diamond.
