Mulch keeps weeds at bay, sustains moisture in soil and protects plants from changes in temperature. Mulch comes in many varieties, from pine bark or pine needles to stone. While stone mulch won't discompose and add organic material to the soil like mulch made from bark or pine needles, it does add an attractive look to a garden. Crushed stone mulch also won't blow away in the wind or carry diseases, as do organic mulches.
Instructions
1. Fill a wheelbarrow with enough stone mulch to cover your planter with about a 1- to 2-inch-thick layer. Move the wheelbarrow to the side of the planter and set it down.
2. Place the mulch into a bucket and pour the crushed stone in small piles, about 6 inches high, around your planter. Avoid crushing any of the plant's foliage as you lay down the mulch.
3. Spread the mulch out into an even 1- to 2-inch-thick layer. Leave a 5- to 6-inch diameter circle around all of the plants in the planter.
4. Water the plants like usual over the crushed stone mulch. Pull any weeds out from between the crushed stone mulch as they appear.
