You can make your own black tutu, with no sewing expertise required.
There are two main types of tutus you can make---long, flowing tutus or short, nearly horizontal tutus. Both have their antecedents in classical ballet, and the only difference in construction is where you cut the hem. For an artistic look, consider layering different shades of black, white and gray to make a black tutu that's truly eye-catching. You can also experiment with sequined tulle and glitter tulle, depending on the look you're going for.
Instructions
Prep Work
1. Take your waist measurement with a tape measure and add a two-inch allowance for a waistband overlap. Cut a strip of black ribbon to this measurement.
2. Measure the width of your waistband ribbon. Cut a square of black Velcro or other burr-fastener tape that's two inches long and as wide as the measurement you just made.
3. Pull the two sides of the burr-fastener tape apart---note that one side has pointy hooks and one side has soft raised loops.
4. Sew the pointy hook side of the tape to the underside of the left end of your ribbon, and the raised loop side of the tape to the top side of the right end of your ribbon.
5. Decide how many layers of tulle you want in your tutu. Multiply your waistband measurement by the number of layers you want and divide by 36 to convert that measurement into yards.
6. Lay your tulle yardage on the floor and cut it into strips as long as your waistband.
Assembly
7. Stack your tulle layers and pin them to the back (wrong) side of waistband with straight sewing pins.
8. Sew the tulle onto the waistband, making sure your stitches catch each layer of tulle.
9. Cut your tutu hem to the length you want---you might want to try it on before you decide.
10. Embellish your tutu with any decorations you want, such as sequin trim, feathers, flowers or beads.
