In addition to its beaches and eclectic history, Uruguay's location situated as a hub between Brazil and Argentina with access to the largest economies of the region makes it attractive for foreign business. Uruguay is a democratic country with a stable economy. With a valid passport, if you are traveling for business or pleasure as a U.S. resident, with a few exceptions, you do not need a visa.
Tourist Visa
To travel to Uruguay for pleasure as a tourist you need a valid passport. A visa is not required unless you will be staying for more than three months. You qualify as a tourist if you are vacationing or traveling for the purpose of recreational and leisure activities.
Diplomat Visa
To travel to Uruguay for official business as a diplomat, you need a United States passport valid for at least six months, one passport-type photograph and a letter from the the U.S. Department of State or government agency that is sending you to Uruguay with details of who you are with your passport number for identification, explaining the reason for your travel and the date of the trip. The letter should be addressed to "Embassy of Uruguay, 1913 I St., NW, Washington D.C. 20006."
Business Visa
If you are traveling for business to Uruguay but will not actually be conducting any commercial activities, you only need a passport. If, however, you will be conducting commercial activities during your stay, you require a business visa. If you are being paid for work by a company in Uruguay you will not be issued a visa. If you intend to become employed in Uruguay you will need a work visa. "VisaHQ.com," an online visa service provider, recommends that you travel with a passport that is valid for at least six months.
Student Visa
U.S. exchange students who wish to study in Uruguay are required to apply for a student visa with the documentation of the program they are studying or have completed. Similar to a bachelor's degree in the U.S., Uruguay offers study programs of two to four years in business, health, engineering and public administration. Continued education is also offered for dentistry, law, psychology and other professions which could take an additional six years. A student may also receive her doctorate.
