Although a degree in medical sonography can be a pathway to a rewarding career, schooling at the collegiate level can be expensive. There are a wide variety of scholarships that are available to help medical sonography students pay for their tuition and associated expenses. These scholarships are available from professional organizations, as well as from institutions that offer programs in medical sonography.
SDMS Foundation Scholarship Program
The Foundation of the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography provides scholarship money for medical sonography majors through the SDMS Foundation Scholarship Program. SDMS Foundation Scholarships are awarded in the amount of $2,500. In order to be eligible, an applicant must be a member or student member of SDMS, must be attending school at an accredited institution in the United States, and must demonstrate financial need. Applicants must also complete a one- to two-page essay explaining why they deserve the scholarship. There are two annual deadlines for application, January 31 and July 31. SVU Anne Jones Scholarship
The Society for Vascular Ultrasound provides financial assistance to medical sonography students with a concentration in ultrasound technology through the Anne Jones Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded in the amount of $2,500. In order to be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident attending school full-time, must be entering the last year of their program and must have a grade point average of at least 3.5. Students do not need to be a member of SVU in order to be eligible. The annual deadline for application is April 5. Lansing Community College Medical Scholarships
Lansing Community College in Michigan offers a variety of scholarships to students pursuing a medical sonography degree at the institution. One is the Belen Health Careers Scholarship, which is offered to a student over 25 years of age who commits to working one year at a Lansing health care facility. The Jan and Joe Foster Health Careers Scholarship is awarded to a mother, 23 years or older, who has a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Ingham Regional Medical Center Peppermint Gift Shop Scholarship is awarded in the amount of $1,500 to two medical students each year.
