1. Compare charitable organizations that work with orphan children in Africa, using a reputable charity rating system, such as Charity Navigator or the American Institute of Philanthropy's system. Some organizations have high administrative and advertising costs, which means that your money isn't always going to help the child that you sponsor. You want to choose an organization that has a high rating.
2. Complete the organization's application form. This form will ask you details about what you are looking for. For example, you can often choose whether to sponsor a boy or a girl, the age range of the child and the country the child lives in. If you don't have preferences, the organization will match you up with the child that needs you most.
3. Set up automatic payments with the charity. The charity will charge your credit card or debit your bank account directly. Each organization has a specific way to do this, so follow the charity's instructions closely.
4. Send extra money for holidays or birthdays. While not necessary, you could help brighten the day of the orphan child that you sponsor even more by remembering a birthday or special holiday, such as Christmas. Check with the organization's policy regarding extra gifts. Some may allow you to send a present, while others prefer you to send money.
