Radiology school is a 2-year training program for students who want to enter the medical field as a radiographer. Radiographers, also known as radiologic technologists, work with doctors and hospitals to produce images with radiography and to help interpret the images. Radiologic technologists perform such tests as MRI, mammography, sonography, CT scans and other types of radiography.
Identification
Before applying for a radiology school, potential students must be at least 18 years of age. Applicants must have either a high school diploma or a GED with a composite score of 254 or above. The grade point average for high school graduates should be 2.5 or above. Future students should have taken courses in science and math in high school. The preferred classes to take include biology, anatomy and algebra. Grades in math and science classes should be a C or above.
Features
Potential students should study for and take the ACT (American College Testing) exam. Radiology schools require an ACT score of 18 or above.
Considerations
Radiology technicians must be able to move heavy equipment and patients. They also must have clear enough vision to see the radiographic images to interpret them. Good communication skills is necessary to give instructions to patients and confer with other medical personnel. Good decision making is also an important skill.
Significance
Some radiology programs now require that applicants take college courses before applying. The recommended areas for study include mathematics, communication, sciences and humanities.
Function
Some schools require future students to spend several hours observing in the radiology department of their local hospitals. This gives students an opportunity to see firsthand what the job will be like. Observation forms are then completed and sent to the school.
Potential
When all the requirements are fulfilled, students can apply to the program. There is usually an application to be completed and a fee that must be paid. The school's administration will schedule an interview with potential students.
