Theme Float Ideas
When the occasion arises for a themed float idea for a parade in your hometown, you want to have the best, most original float rolling down the street. There are many ideas for themed floats that vary in difficulty and cost. Choosing your themed float depends on the money you have to spend and the manpower you have available to contribute. Write down your ideas and make sure you will easily be able to get all that you need before you begin.
History
A history-themed float is always a big hit. Consider the history of the parade, the town in which its being held or the history of the occasion being celebrated. You can also do a themed float on the history of America of a historic person. Check yard sales and secondhand stores for historic clothing and costumes. You can also contact local historical societies and ask for their help. Check with the library and local historians for period information.
School Spirit
It's always a good idea to go with your local high school's colors and mascot as a theme for your parade float. Use crepe paper or poster board to decorate with the school colors. Contact the school to see if you can use their actual mascot or if they have ideas to contribute. Use cheerleaders and football players to throw candy. For even more fun, have the girls dress up as the football players and the boys as cheerleaders.
Western
Choose a Western theme and have your riders dress as cowboys, pioneer women and Indians. Use colors like tans and browns as well as deep greens and corals. Use brown artificial turf as your float surface to resemble dry dirt or sand. For trim, use bandannas or fringed trim from a craft or fabric store. Make cacti from poster board or use chicken wire to shape into a cactus and cover with paper mache. Use a child's wagon with a cardboard cover to look like a miniature covered wagon. You can even add a mock campfire by placing wood pieces around a small fan. Tie red and yellow ribbon to the fan so when it blows up through the wood, it looks like fire.
