Upholstering your own headboard can help you create a custom look for your bedroom.
Purchasing a new, custom upholstered headboard might be a bit out of your budget. You can save money by doing the dirty work yourself and creating your own upholstered headboard. Before you begin your project, gather up everything you need in one upholstered headboard kit that will make assembling your project as easy as possible.
Instructions
1. Trace the shape of your headboard onto a piece of wood and cut to shape. Plywood is the most durable option for this project, but you can also use particle board, which is more affordable. If you don't have the tools to create your own headboard, consider recovering an old one. If you would like to make a tufted headboard, consider using a large sheet of pegboard to avoid having to drill any holes.
2. Lay a large sheet of upholstery foam, at least 2 inches thick, flat on the ground with your precut headboard on top of it. Trace around the headboard with a permanent marker and cut along your traced lines with a utility knife.
3. Add a bag of cotton batting to the kit. This will be wrapped around your foam and wooden headboard. This batting should be pulled taut and even over your headboard to make your headboard look more plush and be more comfortable to lean against.
4. Cut your fabric to size. Once you have picked a fabric you like, lay it over your headboard and trace. Add several inches around each side of your headboard before cutting. This excess will be used to pull over the back of your headboard and staple in place. These extra inches will also account for the extra width of the foam and batting.
5. Add any extra trim pieces or materials you will need to complete your look. If you are tufting your headboard, you will need buttons and upholstery thread. You will also need a drill to make your holes before upholstering. If you are adding any piping or welting, include this material in your kit.
