Put A Vertical Line In An Email

Outlook 2010 includes pre-formatted shapes for your email message.

Microsoft Outlook 2010 can insert graphics in an email message; a vertical line in an email message can act as a separator line between the text and a photograph, for example. The Insert tab on the command Ribbon includes an Illustrations group that contains pre-formatted shapes; the Shapes button contains the Line options; the Drawing Tools ribbon features formatting commands that change the line's color and thickness for a custom look on your message.

Instructions

1. Open the Outlook email program.

2. Click the Home tab.

3. Click the New E-mail button in the New group. Open a new message window.

4. Click the Insert tab on the command Ribbon.

5. Click the arrow beside the Shapes button in the Illustrations group. A chart of shapes opens.

6. Click the Line button in the Lines section. This button appears as a diagonal line. The pointer converts to a + symbol as it moves over the message box.

7. Click and drag the pointer to insert the line on the message box. Adjust or pull the ends of the line for the vertical position.

8. Click on the line again to edit. Select the preferred editing options from the Drawing Tools ribbon. For example, the Format tab includes the Shape Styles and Shape Outline options that can change the line's color and thickness.

9. Click away from the line to set in place on the message box.

Tips Warnings

If your email program does not feature a Shapes command, you can insert a line on a Microsoft Word document and copy it to the new email message: open a Word document, click the Insert tab, click the Shapes arrow, then click the Line button. Click and drag on the Word document to create the line, then copy and paste this line to the email message box.

Your recipients' email program may not recognize the graphics, so the vertical line may not appear in your message.
