Window Molding Ideas

Window molding makes a big difference in the look of a window.

Window molding depends on a number of different things, from the location of the window, to personal preference, to the budget. Before you start installing your window molding you should carefully consider the options. Once you've settled on a type and style of molding, make sure to stain it prior to putting it up to avoid unwanted dripping or other potential accidents.

Basic Miter Frame

If a window isn't in the center of a room and shouldn't be considered a main attraction, simple molding is generally the best option. When a window is in a small bedroom, hallway, or otherwise off to the side, basic four-sided molding with mitered corners works well. This style resembles a wooden picture frame and can be simply built and installed by measuring the inner spans of the space and using a miter saw to cut 45-degree miters on moldingto make the corners. With basic miter molding all four sides are the same, which looks especially good on high windows.

Corner Block

If you don't have a miter saw but still want to mold a window to give it a complete and finished look, use corner block molding. Use blocks for the top corners; nail them so they are on the outer edgess of the window. In many cases these blocks will have a design or other pattern, which will give them a stronger presence and make them stand out more. After the corners are nailed place trim against them from below and across the middle of the window.

If the window has no bottom sill you can install corner blocks on the lower corners as well. Corner block window molding is the easiest type to install.

Crown

Crown window is a classic molding style that is great for large or centerpiece windows. However, crown molding is difficult to install because it leans out from the window frame at an angle. This requires a nailer behind the molding to assist in holding it out.

It usually pays to hire someone with previous experience in molding and carpentry to perform the installation. This will prevent painful mistakes that can be time consuming and potentially expensive. To add to the classic appeal of crown molding dress up the rest of the window using sculpted trim and other ornate decorations.
