Free satellite transmissions can be acquired when using a FTA (Free-To-Air) satellite receiver in tandem with a satellite dish aimed at an appropriate satellite. The procedure, while similar to setting up a satellite dish TV provider's system, does not require paying for any subscription. To modify the FTA dish so that two separate satellite receivers can be used, acquire a few parts from a satellite supplier. You will also need basic tools and a number of cables that can be obtained from a hardware store.
Instructions
1. Go to the FTA (Free-To-Air) satellite dish that is aimed at the overhead satellite which is providing a free satellite transmission broadcast. Unscrew the connector on the white coaxial cable from the bottom of the LNB (low noise block amplifier) module that is on the satellite dish. Screw the end of the white coaxial cable into the output connection labeled No. 1 on the satellite multi-switch panel.
2. Loosen the two screws connected to the side of the LNB module with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the LNB module off the lateral support pole it is riding on. Loosen the two screws connected to the bottom of the LNB adapter plate with the Phillips-head screwdriver.
3. Place the LNB adapter plate on the end of the lateral support pole. Rotate the plate so that the three individual rods coming off of the other end of the pole are all facing up.
4. Place the LNB module (the one that was just removed) onto the rod furthest to the right. Rotate the LNB module so that the plastic front faces the dish. Tighten the screws. Repeat this with the two additional LNB modules and the two other rods on the plate.
5. Screw the end of a 3 foot coaxial cable into the coax connector on the bottom of the LNB module at the very left. Screw the other end of the coaxial cable into the first input on the satellite multi-switch panel. Repeat this procedure with the LNB module next to the leftmost one, but connect the coaxial cable into the second input on the satellite multi-switch panel. Repeat this procedure with the last LNB module and the third input on the satellite multi-switch panel.
6. Place the satellite multi-switch panel against the pole of the dish. Affix the satellite multi-switch panel to the pole with masking tape.
7. Connect an end of the 100 foot coaxial cable to the second output on the satellite multi-switch panel. Run the coaxial cable into the home and over to the second satellite receiver. Screw the free end of the coaxial cable into the coax input on the back of the second satellite receiver.
8. Go over to the first satellite receiver. Unscrew the coaxial cable from the coax input on the back of the receiver. Screw the coaxial cable into the coax input on the coax adapter. Screw an end of a 1 foot coaxial cable into each of the two coax outputs on the coax adapter. Screw the free ends of the two coaxial cables into the two coax inputs on the back of the receiver.
Tips Warnings
You can label the coaxial cables with masking that that has magic marker writing on them--this can help you keep track of which cable goes where. It will also help should you need to remove a particular cable later.
