About two years ago we painted our kitchen cupboards (older home). We stripped down the old wood completely, but there were just plywood and not worth re-finishing as we were on a limited budget. Then lightly sanded and put on two coats of good primer. We painted the cupboards white then had new doors cut as they were in rough shape, doing the same with two coats primer. I painted the doors navy blue. Question is, both were painted with melamine paint, however the white part of the cupboard and the inner shelves are showing a yellow tinge, I tried wiping them down with tsp incase it was kitchen grease, etc however no change. I was instructed that this was the best paint to buy, it is good quality paint, isnt melamine supposed to cover almost anything, once it is primed, any ideas why it would be turning yellowish. I thought I would get away without repainting for a few years...
Thanks.
I don't recall ever having used melamine paint but it sounds like it was an oil base prroduct. Oil base whites are notorious for yellowing as they age. This is not something that can be washed off. Yellowing of the paint doesn't mean it is wearing out just that it isn't white anymore. Another coat will whiten it back up but will also yellow again sometime in the future.
Latex whites don't yellow but unfortunetly they don't dry as hard = not as durable. The only good solution is using a waterborne white enamel. Dries as hard as oil enamel but doesn't yellow. Both SWP and Ben Moore sell waterborne and the folks at the store can advise you of any particulars when recoating over melamine.
I've never heard of melamine paint
Oil does yellow like that though
It can't be cleaned
A repaint with the waterborne enamel would be the fix

Some of the custom cabinet shops around here use melamine for a finish. Don't know where they purchase it though.
Thanks for the information I will look into the other paint that you mentioned.
Just so you know, Melamine is an oil based paint, sorry forgot to mention that. We originally purchased the paint at Home Depot, I think its quite common here in Ontario. Thanks to you both.
