Dell laptops come with LCD displays that occasionally have hardware issues. Some problems with a Dell screen can be fixed by changing a few video settings in the Windows display properties. However, some errors require a Dell technician to fix the broken display. You can do a few troubleshooting steps to fix it yourself and ensure it isn't a broken laptop screen. Some problems with a Dell laptop, like font issues or incorrect screen size, are a quick fix. If the screen does not provide an image at all, it may need to be sent to Dell for repair.
Instructions
1. Right-click the desktop and select Properties. This opens a display where you set the resolution. This will remedy an issue where the screen icons are too big or too small. In the screen settings Resolution section of the Properties window, use the slider to increase the resolution to make the icons smaller. Slide it to the left to make the resolution smaller, which increases the size.
2. Connect the laptop to an external monitor. The cable for connection to the computer is attached to the monitor. Most computers have a symbol or color code the monitor connection. Look for a match on the back of the computer that attaches to the monitor cable. This test is for screens that show absolutely no picture. If the external monitor still shows no picture, then the issue is not the screen but possibly the motherboard's monitor connection. If the monitor shows a picture, then the problem is with the screen. Either way, the issue probably needs a Dell technician to replace the broken hardware.
3. Press the FN key on the laptop and hold down the power button. This opens the Dell diagnostic tests. It's used if you are having problems with blurry screens. The test will ask if you've seen colors and lines on the screen. Go through the diagnostics to attempt to fix the problems. If the colors or blurriness still don't appear, you need to contact a Dell technician.
4. Hold the FN key and press the up arrow key to increase the brightness. This can be done if the screen is dark and you need more brightness to see the images.
5. Use the Dell CD to reinstall the video drivers. You can also download the newest drivers from Dell's official website. This will fix any problems or conflicting errors with Dell drivers and the operating system. This may happen when you upgrade your operating system to a newer version. To install monitor drivers, insert the CD-ROM and follow the prompts. The installation wizard starts as soon as you insert the CD-ROM. Follow the installation wizard's instructions through the process.
