Make Palm Trees For Plays

When you don't have access to real palm trees, you can make replicas.

If you plan to stage a play or other live event that incorporates an island scene or theme, you are going to need the requisite palm tree. As real palm trees are quite large and difficult to transport, as well as only growing in tropical climates, you will probably be forced to make your own. With the use of a few commonly found items you can build a very realistic looking palm that will transform your stage into a tropical paradise.

Instructions

1. Cut a cardboard tube from a carpet roll to the height you'd like your palm tree. Visit a carpeting store and request a cardboard tube that new carpets are wrapped around. This will be used as the trunk for your palm.

2. Slip the cardboard tube onto the microphone stand to hold it upright.

3. Wrap the cardboard tube in burlap. Cut a number of burlap sacks into strips using scissors or a utility knife, then wrap and tie them around the cardboard tube in a spiral fashion, starting at the top. This should be done to simulate the outside of the palm trunk. Lay a few strips at the base of the tree to hide the microphone stand base.

4. Open an old umbrella and insert the handle end into the inside of the cardboard tube. The top of the umbrella will be used to support the fronds of the tree. A dark umbrella works best, but if the best you can find is bright and colorful, spray paint the umbrella a neutral color that won't clash with the tissue paper you've selected.

5. Cut some green tissue paper into palm-shaped leaves then tape one end of them to the top center of the umbrella. Apply enough of these to completely cover the umbrella and finalize the palm tree.

Tips Warnings

Add some coconuts to your palm by inflating and taping on some brown balloons.
