Cook up summer treats on your homemade barbecue.
Come summertime, everyone wants to get outdoors and relax in the open air. Barbecues are a favorite way of passing summer evenings with friends and family, and smoky, tasty grilled food is always a highlight. Many types of commercial barbecues are available, or you can hire someone to build one in your backyard. Or, if you prefer to save on costs, it's possible to build your own.
Instructions
1. Level the ground in the area you want your barbecue to be, adjusting with the spade. Lay concrete blocks in a square or rectangle, about 6 or 7 inches wider than you want the barbecue to be.
2. Mix the surface bonding cement as per the cement manufacturer's instructions. Cover the concrete blocks with around #xBD;-inch thickness of surface bonding cement. Use the trowel to lay the cement, wiping it back and forth, then smoothing it over to create a flat surface. Let dry as per the manufacturer's directions.
3. Lay the metal grill in the center of the dry cement block base. Draw a line around three sides of the metal grill, to give the inside-wall dimensions of the brick barbecue.
4. Mix the mortar in the wheelbarrow. This typically requires mixing it to a mud-like consistency with water, but always follow the manufacturer's directions.
5. Place a line of mortar along one side of the pencil line, about two bricks long, and a little wider that a brick. Run the point of the trowel through the middle of the mortar, creating a V called a furrow; this helps set the brick in the mortar. Lay a parallel line of mortar next to the first one.
6. Push the first brick into the mortar, tapping it gently to make sure it is well-seated in the mortar. Butter another brick---this means putting mortar along its side---then place it in the parallel line of mortar, and push it right up against the first brick. Tap it so that it is at the same height as the first brick. Scrape away any mortar that oozes out between them.
7. Continue this way for the three sides of the barbecue, laying a line of mortar, buttering the bricks, then placing them around #xBD; inch apart, and making sure they are all level. In one part of the bottom layer of bricks, leave a small hole without mortar, to allow for drainage.
8. Build until you have the desired height. Scrape away excess mortar with the trowel as you go.
9. Mix another batch of the surface bonding cement. Cover the entire barbecue, leaving the small drainage hole at the bottom free. This is an optional step, which makes the brick barbecue blend nicely with the base. It won't affect the barbecue's functionality if you leave this out. Let the barbecue cure for at least three days.
10. Douse the barbecue in water and scrub with the scrubbing brush. Let it dry.
11. Arrange the firebricks on the bottom of the barbecue, and line the inner walls of the barbecue with firebricks simply stacked on top of each other. Set the last row of firebricks at the height you want the grill, then place the metal grill resting on the top of the firebricks.
